A business listing records a company’s key facts in fixed fields. For a bakery, it might look like this: name “Miller’s Bakery,” address “8 Linden Street, Springfield,” hours “Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” category “Bakery,” plus a phone number and website. Because each detail sits in its own field, software can read it directly instead of having to pick the business hours out of running text.
Such listings exist in many places: in a Google Business Profile, which appears in Google Maps and elsewhere; in other map services; in general and industry-specific directories, for example for tradespeople, medical practices, or hotels; and in profiles on booking and review platforms. Many listings come about without the business creating them, because directories and map services take details from other sources. A business usually gains control over such a listing only once it claims it and verifies that it owns it.
How AI systems use business listings
For local questions, such as “Which bakery in Springfield opens early on Saturdays?” AI systems need exactly the details that business listings hold. Providers describe in varying detail where they get such data:
- ChatGPT: According to OpenAI, ChatGPT can use location information to include local restaurants, news, or weather in an answer and may share the user’s location with third-party providers that supply more local information, such as nearby business listings. OpenAI does not name these providers. For restaurants, ChatGPT can also show available reservation times: from OpenTable worldwide, from Resy in the US, and from Yelp in the US and Canada, depending on the restaurant. How ChatGPT draws on web content is covered under ChatGPT search.
- Gemini and Google’s AI features: Google writes that answers from its AI features in Google Search, namely AI Overviews and AI Mode, can include information about local businesses and that Business Profiles can help products and services become visible in AI answers. Google counts keeping Business Profile information up to date among the recommended practices for these features. According to Google, the Gemini Apps can use public information from Google Maps, depending on settings. In Google Maps itself, a feature called Ask Maps has used Gemini models since March 2026 to answer complex questions about places. After launching Ask Maps in the US and India, Google began rolling it out to more countries in August 2026, in English to more than 150 countries and territories.
- Claude: According to Anthropic, users have been able to connect Claude to platforms such as Tripadvisor, Booking.com, and Thumbtack since April 2026 through connectors, links to other services that they turn on themselves. Businesses maintain their own profiles on these platforms.
Providers don’t disclose how much weight an AI system gives business listings compared with other sources. Directories are also ordinary websites: AI systems can retrieve them for an answer and cite them as sources, and their content can end up in the training data of future language models. Outdated details in a directory can therefore show up in AI answers even when the business’s own website has long been up to date.
Consistent details and ongoing upkeep
It makes sense for the name, address, business hours, and category in every listing to match the business’s own website and its Organization markup, the machine-readable company details in the website’s code. The entry on brand fact consistency explains why contradictory details can affect AI answers and how a business keeps its core facts the same everywhere.
Google sets its own rules for Business Profiles, which it names explicitly in its guidance on its AI features. The name in the profile should be the name a business uses on its storefront, website, and stationery, without additions such as marketing taglines. Categories should describe the core business with as few entries as possible. Besides regular hours, special hours can be added for holidays or special events.
Keeping a business listing current is not a one-time task, because business hours, phone numbers, and addresses change. After a move or a change of hours, the new details therefore belong in every known listing, not just on the website. Many listings also show reviews; the role that reviews and other outside sources play in AI answers is part of Off-Page GEO.
