Citation rate shows whether a website’s content actually serves as a source for AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. It counts AI citations: source references such as links, footnotes, or source cards that point to the site’s pages. When an answer names the brand only in its text without giving one of its pages as a source, that is a mention, which mention rate captures. The two figures are reported separately.
Number of citations or share of answers
Citation rate is expressed in two ways that complement each other:
- Number of citations: how often the site’s pages were given as sources in a given period. Microsoft supplies such figures itself: Total Citations in the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often a site’s content was displayed as a source in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations. According to Microsoft, these figures are based on a sample.
- Share of answers: in how many answers to a defined set of questions at least one of the site’s pages appears as a source. For example, ten questions, each put to an AI system ten times, produce 100 answers. If 12 of them give one of the site’s pages as a source, the citation rate is 12%.
The difference lies in what gets counted. An answer can cite several sources, including several pages from the same website. The number of citations counts each of these source references; the share only counts whether an answer cites the site at all. Google’s generative AI performance report in Search Console counts impressions instead of citations: how often links to the site were shown. In a site’s total, two links to it in the same AI answer count as a single impression; broken down by page, each page counts separately.
Figures from Microsoft’s and Google’s reports are based on answers that were actually shown to users. But they also depend on demand, that is, on how many questions people ask about a website’s topics. The share of answers, by contrast, is something you measure yourself: with a fixed prompt set whose questions are asked regularly and repeatedly through prompt tracking. As long as the questions, AI systems, number of runs, and settings stay the same, the share can be compared over months and with competitors. Relating a site’s citations to all citations in its competitive field yields a share that counts as a variant of AI share of voice.
By page and by AI system
Citation rate becomes more revealing when it is reported not only for the whole website but also for individual pages. That shows which content serves as a source—a guide, a pricing overview, or a product page, for example—and which important pages are never cited. Bing’s report lists citations by page; in your own measurements, this means recording which URLs each answer gives as sources.
Separating the figures by AI system matters just as much, because systems cite different numbers of sources. In an April 2026 preprint, a study released ahead of peer review, three researchers in China who list no institutional affiliation analyzed answers to 602 predefined questions in Chinese and English. On average, ChatGPT cited considerably fewer sources per question than Google (labeled “Google AI Overview/Gemini” in the study) and Perplexity. Where an answer lists more sources, every website has more chances to be among them. Values from different AI systems are therefore not directly comparable and are reported separately for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. On top of that, the cited sources can change considerably from one query to the next (answer variability); only the trend across many answers and several months is meaningful.
What citation rate doesn’t show
Citation rate counts how often a page appears as a source. It does not show where in the answer the page appears or what role it plays there—Microsoft stresses this for its report as well. Nor does it show visits: a citation means that a page was shown as a source, not that anyone clicked on it. How many people reach the website through links in AI answers is a separate figure, AI referral traffic.
In GEO monitoring, citation rate therefore sits next to mention rate and visits from AI answers.
